1. ​​Global Innovation Index 2023

Context:

India retains 40th rank in the Global Innovation Index 2023.

Global Innovation Index (GII) 2023:

  • The Global Innovation Index is a leading reference for measuring an economy’s innovation ecosystem performance. 
  • Published annually, it is also a valuable benchmarking tool used by policymakers, business leaders, and other stakeholders to assess progress in innovation over time.
  • The GII 2023 is the 16th edition of the rankings.
  • It is published by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
  • For the 13th year in a row, Switzerland is the most innovative economy in 2023 followed by Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom and Singapore.
  • From a rank of 81 in 2015, India has risen to 40 in 2023. 
  • The consistent improvement in the GII ranking is owing to the immense knowledge capital, the vibrant start-up ecosystem, and the amazing work done by the public and private research organizations. 
  • The GII is a reliable tool for governments across the world to assess the innovation-led social and economic changes in their respective countries. 
  • Over the years, the GII has established itself as a policy tool for various governments and helped them to reflect upon the existing status quo.

2. Technical Textiles

Syllabus: GS-3 

Prelims: National Technical Textiles Mission

Mains: Technical textiles industry in India

Context:

The Ministry of Textiles approved 18 R&D projects valuing INR 46.74 Crores across different areas of Technical Textiles.

Details:

  • The R&D projects were approved across key strategic areas of Geotech, Protech, Indutech, Sustainable Textiles, Sportech, Smart E-Textiles and the Meditech segments.
  • Out of the projects, 14 are high-value projects, 3 are prototype grant projects and 1 is ideation grant project. 
  • With the vision of enhancing the global market for Indian technical textiles, the government launched the National Technical Textiles Mission in 2020. Read more about the mission in the linked article.

3. CRIIIO 4 GOOD

Syllabus: GS-2, Social Justice, Gender Equality

Prelims: CRIIIO 4 GOOD

Context:

Union Minister launched CRIIIO 4 GOOD modules to advance gender equality and empower young people.

CRIIIO 4 GOOD:

  • It is a new online portal containing life skills learning modules to promote gender equality among girls and boys.
  • The programme was launched in association with the International Cricket Council, UNICEF, and the Board of Control for Cricket in India at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
  • The portal intends to use the popularity of cricket as a tool to spread awareness about gender quality and opportunities for girls.
  • ‘CRIIIO 4 GOOD’ is a series of 8 cricket-based animation films to promote gender parity, equip girls with life skills and encourage their participation in sports. 
  • The themes of the eight modules are leadership, problem-solving, confidence, decision-making, negotiation, empathy, teamwork and goal-setting.

4. Shaheed Bhagat Singh

Syllabus: GS-1, History, Important personalities of the freedom struggle

Prelims: Shaheed Bhagat Singh

Mains: Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s contribution to India’s freedom struggle

Context:

Prime Minister remembers Shaheed Bhagat Singh on his birth anniversary.
