What is Situation Reaction Test (SRT)?

The SSB board of NDA Exam conducts a number of tests over these five days to check whether or not a candidate has the qualities to serve in the Indian armed forces. SRT tests are often conducted on the second day of SSB. Situation Reaction Test, as the name of the test implies, is a test that evaluates the responses or reactions of all SSB applicants to a variety of situations. The other three psychological tests included in the set of tests administered during the SSB Interview are

  • Thematic Appreciation Test (TAT)
  • Word Association Test (WAT)
  • Self-Description Test (SD)

There are 60 situations-based questions in the Situation Reaction Test.  The candidates will only have 30 minutes to respond to the 60 questions. Therefore, candidates must be able to read, think, and give answers to the questions within the allotted time. The events in the Situation Reaction Test are real-world issues that people might run into on a daily basis, and a response is required in each case.

The results of the Situation Reaction Test are then compared to the qualities that an ideal officer would have. The manner in which a candidate responds reveals his maturity, common sense, sense of timing, ability to reason, and empathy.

Candidates preparing for the other Defence Exams can find the following useful

What Is The Procedure Of the Situation Reaction Test?

A booklet comprising 60 real-world scenarios is presented to the candidate, and they have 30 minutes to respond. This time limitation has been purposefully cut short so that the candidate will not have much time to think about the situation and will instead answer with the first thought that comes into his mind.

A candidate has 30 minutes to respond to each of the 60 scenarios. However, if the candidate fails to understand a certain situation they may skip it and move on to the next one without spending any time.

To respond to each scenario, a candidate just needs to write two or three lines. A quick answer within the allotted time frame is therefore important. Candidate responses should be concise and to the point, they should avoid going into great detail about their conduct.

Tips For Situation Reaction Test

  • The response should be in line with your capacity and abilities. Don’t fabricate or lie in your answers because consistency across all psychological tests is examined.
  • Keep the answers short and to the point. You can use short-length keywords to answer the situation and save time.
  • Keep in mind that there is no correct solution for any situation. Write what is true to your personality and try to prioritise your actions. E.g. First, think of saving human life, then an animal’s life, and then plan for saving materials.
  • Always focus towards a positive solution.
  • In order to maintain consistency in your responses, the same situation may occasionally be asked in multiple ways. The best you can do is to sound natural as the answers will be examined by skilled psychologists who are qualified to judge your cognitive abilities in light of your responses.

What Is The Importance Of The Situation Reaction Test (SRT)?

Situation Reaction Test, sometimes known as SRT, is a psychological assessment tool created specifically to gauge candidates’ responses in certain common situations. Their answers reflect their personalities and provide a true representation of their conscious and unconscious minds. It shows whether they possess the cognitive abilities necessary to manage unusual events.

We encounter several situations in life every day that require us to make decisions. While being conscious and employing all of our senses, we respond to these situations inadvertently. Our thought processes, prior experiences, prior knowledge, and current skills all play a role in how we respond to a given situation. A significant factor in this decision-making also involves the numerous beliefs we have formed and nurtured throughout our lives. These factors collectively define who we are and mould our personalities. SRT is meant to bring out this personality, developed over the years.

These responses highlight the virtues of rational reasoning and hasty decision-making. For an officer in the Indian armed services, these characteristics are absolutely necessary. The major goal of the Situation Reaction Test (SRT) at the SSB Interview is to assess the candidates’ abilities to handle situational problems that arise in daily life.
