WB Police SI Recruitment Overview
The state’s police recruitment board initiates the recruitment process after considering the total number of vacancies available. For example, in 2021, a total of 208 vacancies were available. The WB Police SI rank is subdivided into two categories: the Unarmed Police branch and the other for the Armed unit. Both male and female candidates may apply for the post. Based on the availability of vacancies and eligibility, they are to be selected as SIs.
The WB Police SI Physical Standards Eligibility
The physical standards for a sub-inspector in the West Bengal Police department include:
- For a male sub-inspector in the unarmed police branch, the candidate’s height should be above 160 cm, chest should be above 76 cm, and weight should be above 52 kg.
- For a male sub-inspector in the armed police branch, the height should be above 163 cm, the permissible weight is above 54 kg, and the chest size should be above 81 cm.
For lady sub-inspectors in the state, the minimum height should be 155 cm, while the permissible weight is 45 kg.

WB Police SI Exam Pattern
Candidates are required to sit for a competitive examination in order to get selected as an SI. This examination takes place after each candidate, both male and female, has qualified for the PMT (Physical Measurement Test) and the PET (Physical Efficiency Test).
Each candidate is required to clear three papers for the WB Police SI exam: the Arithmetic and General studies paper, the English paper, and the regional language paper (Bengali/ Urdu/ Hindi/ Nepali). The marks distribution and time duration for these papers are as follows:
- For Paper 1 of General studies and Arithmetic, the total marks are 100, and the time duration is 2 hours.
- For Paper 2 of English, the paper is 50 marks, and the time duration is 1 hour.
