IIT Bombay was established in the year 1958 and it was the first institute to be set up with the help of foreign aid. The funds came from UNESCO (Soviet Union). A few years later Parliament decreed the IITs as Institutes of National Importance. IIT Bombay has grown since then and is included among the top technical institutes across the globe.

The institute has received universal recognition as a leader in the field of engineering education and research.
