In mathematics, the number 12 represents a quantity or a value. We often use number 12 in arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. It is a number that lies between 11 and 13. In words, 12 is written as ‘twelve’.
For example, you bought 12 bananas can be written as ‘you bought twelve bananas’.
12 is a two digit number, hence both digits can be placed according to their place value.
The place values from right to left are as follows:
By taking digits from right to left, the number 12 will be represented as:

From the above, we can say that 2 is at ones place and 1 is at tens place.
Similarly number 15 can be represented as:

Example 1: Separate the 12 apples in groups of 4 apples.
Solution:
Since 4 + 4 + 4 = 12, we can separate 12 apples into three groups of 4 apples.
Example 2: Show 12 in a number line as a count of 2.

Example 3: Emma, Amelia and Ava have 4,5 and 3 pencils respectively in their boxes. How many pencils do they have altogether?
Solution:
To find the total number of pencils Emma, Amelia and Ava have, we have to add together the number of pencils each of them have.
4 + 5 + 3 = 12
So, together Emma, Amelia and Ava have 12 pencils.
If a number can be divided into two equal parts then that number is an even number. Since, we can make pairs of 6 to get 12, hence, 12 is an even number.
In word, 12 is written as ‘twelve’.
One dozen is equal to 12 quantities.
The place value of 1 is tens and that of 2 is ones.
The number 12 lies between 11 and 13.
