What is a Percent ?

A number when written as a fraction whose denominator is 100 is a percent.

What is a Fraction ?

A fraction represents a numerical value, which is defined as a part of the whole. The whole may be an object or a group of objects.

What is a Decimal ?

When a number has an integral part and a decimal part which are separated by a decimal point, we get a decimal number.

How to visually represent decimals?

  1. Models: We have here a 100-by-100 grid. Each cell in the grid represents \(\frac{1}{100}\) of the total grid, that is, each cell is a hundredth. Similarly a column is a tenth.
  2. Number line: In the number line, 0 and 1 is marked. Each division is a tenth, that is, 1 tenth, 2 tenth … which is 0.1, 0.2 … and each subdivision is a hundredth, that is, 1 hundredth, 2 hundredth… which is 0.01, 0.02 …

How do I convert?

1. Percent to fraction?

First, remove the % symbol of the given number. Then place that number as the numerator and 100 as the denominator to obtain a fraction. Reduce the fraction.

2. Fraction to percent?

For the given fraction, the division is performed with the numerator as the dividend and the denominator as the divisor. We multiply the quotient by 100 to get the percent value. Add the % symbol.

3. Percent to decimal?

Remove the % sign and divide by 100. To do that, shift the decimal point by two places to the left, as 100 has two zeroes.

4. Decimal to percent?

To get the required percent, simply multiply the given decimal by 100. To do that move the decimal point to the right by two places, as 100 has two zeroes. Add the % symbol.

Solved Examples:

Example 1: Write 68% as a fraction in simplest form.

Solution:

\(68{\%}=\frac{68}{100}\)                Express as a fraction whose denominator is 100
\(=\frac{17}{25}\)                          Divide by 4
Hence, \(68{\%}=\frac{17}{25}\)
Example 2: Write \(\frac{73}{1000}\) as a percent.
Solution:
\(\frac{73}{1000}=0.073\)             Perform the division
\(=0.073{\times}100\)            Multiply by 100
\(=7.3{\%}\)
Hence, \(\frac{73}{1000}=7.3{\%}\)

Example 3: Write 65% as decimal.
Solution:
\(65{\%}=\frac{65}{100}\)               Express as a fraction whose denominator is 100
= 0.65                       Shift the decimal point to the left by 2 places.

Hence, 65% = 0.65

Example 4: Write 0.78 as a percent.
Solution:
0.78 = 0.78 \({\times}\) 100       Multiply by 100
= 78%                         Shift the decimal point to the right by 2 places

Frequently Asked Questions

The symbol % basically denotes that there is 100 in the denominator.

When the numerator and the denominator of a given fraction can be said to have no common factors other than 1, then we have a fraction in its simplest form. Another common term to represent the same is “lowest terms”.

One hundred percent of something means that the entire thing is counted; 100 percent equals one.
To write as a fraction \(100{\%}=\frac{100}{100}=1\)

Visualization can be a useful tool for delving into mathematical problems and explaining mathematical concepts and relationships.
When dealing with a large set of numbers, visualisation can help to simplify things.

Following the steps below, you can easily convert a decimal percent to a fraction:

1. Divide the percent by 100 to get rid of the percent symbol.

2. To remove the decimal point, divide the decimal percent by a power of ten with as many zeroes as the number of decimal places in the given decimal percent.

3. To get the required answer, simplify the fraction.

4. To better understand this explanation, let’s solve a simple example:

    \(5.5{\%}=\frac{5.5}{100}=\frac{55}{10}{\times}\frac{1}{100}=\frac{55}{1000}=\frac{11}{200}\)
