What are decimals?

While expressing a whole number and a fraction together, decimals are utilised. Here, we shall use a “.” (also known as a decimal point) to demarcate the whole number from the fraction. The whole number part is represented to the left of the decimal point, while the fractional part as decimal is  represented to the right of the decimal point.

The group of numbers between two integers on a number line are known as decimal numbers. They are mainly an alternative mathematical representation of fractions. Decimals allow us to express measurable quantities like length, weight, distance, money, etc. with greater accuracy.

Place Value Table:

A place value table ensures that the digits are at their proper places which helps in comparing numbers; addition; or subtraction of numbers. The place value of each digit can be easily shown through a place value table. The value of a place is 10 times the value of the place to its right. Also, the value of each place is one-tenth \(\left ( \frac{1}{10} \right )\) the value of the place to its left.

Solved Examples:

Example 1: Find the sum of 3.25 and 5.326.

Solution:

Place both the decimals in a place value table and find the sum,

fra2

So, \(3.25 \text{ }+ \text{ }5.326 = 8.576\)

Example 2: Add 26.573 and 33.6548 .

Solution:

Place both the decimals in a place value table and find the sum,

fra3

So, \(26.573 \text{ }+ \text{ }33.6548 = 60.2278\)

Example 3: Add 55.857, 44.34 and 66.124 .

Solution:

Place all the decimals in a place value table and find their sum,

fra4

So, \(55.857 \text{ }+ \text{ }44.34\text{ } +\text{ }66.124\text{ }= 166.321\)

Example 4: Calculate the addition of 0.2924, 0.5791 and  0.4805.

Solution:

Place all the decimals in a place value table and find their sum,

fra5

So, \(0.2924 \text{ }+ \text{ }0.5791\text{ } +\text{ }0.4805\text{ }= 1.3520\)

Example 4: Find the sum of  0.5311 and 0.0393.

Solution:

Place all the decimals in a place value table and find their sum,

fra6

So, \(0.5311 \text{ }+ \text{ }0.0393\text{ } =\text{ }0.5704\)

Frequently Asked Questions

A decimal number is the combination of a whole part and a decimal part. The decimal point is a point or dot used to separate the whole and the decimal part of a number.

Decimals with the same number of decimal places are referred to as like decimals.

To convert any decimals into like decimals, we must add the necessary number of zeros to the right of the decimal. To make the process of addition or subtraction simpler, this is done.

For example, 2/3 = 0.666666, Repeating decimals are ones in which one or more digits repeat repeatedly, while non-repeating decimals are those in which the decimal digits do not form any repeating pattern. An example of a non-repeating decimal number is 1.02022022202222.
