The measure of distance or extent from one point to another is known as length. Length indicates how long or wide or tall something is. For example, the length of a pencil, the length and width of a box, the height of a tree or the radius of a circle, and so on.
The length of an object is indicated by a numerical value followed by a unit. The numerical value quantifies the length and the unit is the scale of measurement. For example, 2 centimeters, 3 inches, 2 meters, 5 miles and so on.
As mentioned we can measure the physical dimensions of any object and express these measurements with the help of numbers and units. Measurement without units does not make sense and there are multiple units that can be used to express length. For example, centimeters, meters, inches or miles.
Although we can use any of these units to express the length of objects, a few units are suitable for shorter lengths and others for longer lengths. For instance, the length of a pencil can be expressed in inches, centimeters or millimeters, while the length of a race track can be expressed in miles or kilometers.
These measures can be converted from one unit to another. Here we will focus on establishing the relation between centimeters to inches.
One centimeter is approximately equal to 0.393701 inches. Using this relation, we can easily convert centimeters to inches using the given formula:
Measurement in inches = 0.394 \(\times\) measurement in centimeters
From this equation we can deduce that a centimeter (cm) is smaller than an inch (in.) or in other words we can say that a centimeter is a smaller unit of measurement as compared to an inch.
We can use this relationship for reverse conversion also, that is, from inches to centimeters.
\(\text{Measurement in centimeters}=\frac{\text{Measurement in inches}}{0.394}\)
[Note: To convert from one unit to another we either multiply or divide by a numerical value known as the conversion factor. Here the conversion factor is 0.394.]

\(\text{Measurement in centimeters}=\frac{\text{Measurement in inches}}{0.394}\)
Example 1: Find the number of inches in 5 centimeters
Solution :
Measurement in inches = 0.394 \(\times\) measurement in centimeters
Measurement in inches = 0.394 \(\times\) 5 [Substitute for cm value]
Measurement in inches = 1.97
So there are 1.97 inches in 5 centimeters.
Example 2: Find the number of centimeters in 10 inches ?
Solution:
Measurement in centimeters = \(\frac{\text{Measurement in inches}}{0.394}\)
Measurement in centimeters = \(\frac{10}{0.394}\) [Substitute for inches value]
= 25.381
So there are 25.381 centimeters in 10 inches.
Example 3: An athlete needs to jump 250 inches to score a gold in the pole vault event. The athlete jumps 650 centimeters, does he score a gold?
Solution :
Here two different units of length have been provided. To compare the two lengths we need to express them in the same unit.
Lets convert 250 inches to centimeters,
Measurement in centimeters = \(\frac{\text{Measurement in inches}}{0.394}\)
Measurement in centimeters = \(\frac{250}{0.394}\)
= 634.52
So there are 634.52 centimeters in 250 inches.
The player needs to jump 250 inches, that is, 634.52 centimeters to score.
The athlete has jumped 650 cm which is greater than 634.52 cm. Therefore the athlete has scored in the pole vault event!
