A line is a one dimensional straight shape, which has only length. This article explores the definitions and differences between lines and line segments. A few examples also elaborately explore the differences of both these types of lines....Read MoreRead Less
A line has length but no width, making it a one-dimensional shape. A line is made up of a collection of points that can be stretched indefinitely in opposite directions, which implies that a line has no endpoints. There are also collinear points, defined as points that are located on the same line.
A line segment is a part of a line that includes two endpoints and all of the points between them.
Example 1: Name as many lines and line segments as you can from the image.
Solution:
In the image that is provided,
The line is:
The line segments are:
Example 2:
Label two line segments and lines from the given figure.
Solution:
The lines are:
The line segments are:
Example 3:
Renny was asked to deliver newspapers to four houses as shown in the map. He was thinking that if he had the ability to fly he could easily fly across these houses. What would the trajectories look like if Renny could fly, provided that he did not have to travel in the same order as given on the map.
Note: The starting point of Renny’s journey should be A.
Solution:
The other trajectories are:
Hence, the different trajectories Renny can take to reach the point D are as follows.
A line segment has two endpoints but a line does not. A line segment is a part of a line.
A ray is a part of a line that has one endpoint, and the other end can be extended till infinity.
The value of the length of a line can have units such as millimeters, centimeters, inches, feet, yards, meters, kilometers, or miles.
