Numbers that divide 38 without leaving any remainder are known as factors of 38.
For Example: 2 is a factor of 38 because when we divide 38 by 2 it results in the quotient being 19 and no remainder. The quotient is also a factor of 38.
Thus, to check if a number is a factor of 38 or not, divide 38 by that number, if the remainder is zero, then that number is said to be a factor of 38.

Solution:
Let us divide 38 by 3.
38 ÷ 3 = 12 and the remainder is 2
As 3 is not a factor of 38, we get a remainder as 2.
Therefore to divide the marbles equally among 3 friends, John has to give each of them 12 marbles but still he would be left with 2 marbles.
The factors of 38 are 1, 2, 19 and 38. So, the least factor of 38 is 1 and the greatest factor is 38 itself.
