A factor of a number divides the number evenly, that is, leaves no remainder. Factors of a number can be determined using divisibility rules and division facts. Here we will learn about the factors, prime factors and factor pairs of 85....Read MoreRead Less
Factors of 85 are those natural numbers that divide 85 without leaving any remainder. In other words, we can say that factors of 85 will divide it evenly.
The factors of 85 can be positive as well as negative but they cannot be decimals or fractions. The quotient obtained on dividing 85 by its factor is also a factor of 85.
Factors of 85
Factors | factor pair | Prime factorization |
1,5,17,85 | (1,85), (5,17) | 85 = 5 × 17 |
For example, 5 is a factor of 85 because on dividing 85 by 5 it leaves zero remainder and 17 as the quotient, which is also a factor of 85.
Factors of a number can be obtained by applying divisibility rules and division facts.
Divisor | Is the number a factor of 85 ? | Multiplication Equation |
1 | Yes, 1 is a factor of every number | 1 × 85 = 85 |
2 | No, 85 is an odd number. | – |
3 | No, 8 + 5 = 13 is not divisible by 3 | – |
4 | No,85 ÷ 4 = 21 Remainder = 1 | – |
5 | Yes, ones digit is 5 | 5 × 17 = 85 |
We can stop checking for numbers greater than 5 as the factor pairs start to repeat.
So the factors of 85 are 1, 5, 17 and 85.
[Note: To check whether a number is a factor of 85 or not divide 85 by that number and observe the value of the remainder. If the remainder is zero then the number is a factor of 85 otherwise not.]
A factor tree can be used to determine the prime factors of 85 as shown in the figure.
From the factor tree we can see that the prime factorization of 85 = 5 x 17.
This means 5 and 17 are the prime factors of 85.

The factor pair of any number is a set of two natural numbers which when multiplied result in that number. So the two natural numbers are factors of the original number. A factor pair can be a negative pair or a positive pair.
[Note: Product of two negative numbers is positive.]
The factor pair of 85 is the set of two factors of 85 that when multiplied give 85 as the product.
Thus the factor pairs of 85 can be obtained from the list of its factors.
Positive factors of 85 | Positive factor pair of 85 |
1 x 85 | (1,85) |
5 x 17 | (5,17) |
So the factor pairs of 85 are (1, 85) and (5, 17).
Example 1: Alex has to travel 85 miles at an average speed of 17 mph. In how many hours will he cover the total distance?
Solution:
Total distance to be covered = 85 miles
Speed = 17 mph
To find the total number of hours to cover the distance, we will divide the total distance by the speed, that is,
\(\frac{88}{22}\)
= \(\frac{22~\times~4}{22}\) [(22, 4) is a factor pair of 88]
= 4 [Divide both the numerator and the denominator by 22]
Therefore Alex will take 4 hours to cover the total distance.
Example 2: Find the common factors of 135 and 85.
Solution:
Factors of 135: 1, 3, 5, 9, 15, 27, 45 and 135
Factors of 85: 1, 5, 17, 85
So, the common factors of 85 and 135 are 1 and 5.
Hence, 135 and 85 have 2 common factors.
Example 3:What are the common factors of 85 and 168?
Solution:
Factors of 85 are 1, 5, 17, 85
factors of 168 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 12, 14, 21, 24, 28, 42, 56, 84, 168.
So, the common factor of 85 and 168 is 1.
Yes, 5 is a factor of 85. The number 5 divides 85 exactly. It leaves the remainder 0. So, 5 is a factor of 85.
Yes, 85 is a composite number as it has factors other than 1 and itself, that is, 85. In other words the number 85 has more than two factors.
The factors of 85 are 1,5,17,85
So, the least factor of 85 is 1 and the greatest factor is 85 itself.
The factors of 85 are 1, 5, 17, 85
Hence, the sum of the all the factors of 85 is
= 1 + 5 + 17 + 85 = 108
Hence, the sum is 108.
Factors of 85: 1, 5, 17, 85. So there are 4 factors of 85.
