How much is a Million, Billion, and Trillion?
In math, we often represent larger numbers in exponential form or either call them as million, billion, and trillion. The difference between the words ‘million’ and ‘billion’ is only one letter, yet that one letter denotes that the number is a thousand times greater than the other. Now, let’s see how big each number is.
Million
One million is equal to thousand thousands. In one million, we have 1 followed by 6 zeros, that is, 1, 000, 000 and it can be written as \(10^6 \) (ten to the sixth power). It takes around 11 and a half days to complete one million seconds.
1 million = 1, 000, 000
Billion
One billion is equal to a thousand millions. 1 billion has 1 followed by 9 zeros, that is, 1, 000, 000, 000 and it is represented as \(10^9 \) (ten to the ninth power). One billion seconds is about 32 years.
1 billion = 1, 000, 000, 000
Now, let’s move on to 1 trillion.
Trillion
One trillion equals a thousand billions, or million millions. 1 trillion consists of 1 followed by 12 zeros, that is, 1, 000, 000,000, 000 and can be written as \(10^{12} \) (ten to the twelfth power). It takes about 32,000 years to finish 1 trillion seconds.
1 trillion = 1, 000, 000, 000, 000
[Note: The values which are greater than a trillion are called Quadrillion \((10^{15}) \)and Quintillion \((10^{18}) \).]

Converting Millions to Billions
Although the numbers millions and billions are larger, a basic multiplication operation is all we need to convert them. So, to convert a million to a billion we just have to divide the given number by 1000 billion.
Million to billion = \(\frac{(given ~value ~in~million)}{1000} \) billion
[Note: Similarly, we can even convert a billion to a million by multiplying the billion value by 1000.]
Converting Millions to Trillions
We will now try converting millions to trillions. It may sound a bit challenging. However, we need to do the similar thing that we do for a million to billion conversion. Here, instead of dividing by 1000, we divide the given number with 1000000.
Million to trillion = \(\frac{(given ~value ~in~million)}{1000000} \) trillion
[Note: By multiplying the million value by 1000000, we can convert a trillion to a million.]
Converting Billions to Trillions
So now, we will turn a billion to a trillion by dividing the given billion number by 1000.
Billion to trillion = \(\frac{(given ~value ~in~billion)}{1000} \) trillion

The annual income of Temperate Springs, a company that makes carpets, is $2 million. Can you find how many billions it equals to?
Solution:
Given, the annual income of the company is $2 million.
We know that one billion is equivalent to a thousand million.
Then, by using the million to billion formula we can write,
Million to billion = \(\frac{(given ~value ~in~million)}{1000} \) billion
= \(\frac{2}{1000} \) billion
= 0.002 billion
Hence, the annual income of the Temperate Springs is $0.002 billion.
Example 2:
According to a study, astronomers stated that the Milky Way has 200 billion stars. Then, what would be the count of stars in trillions?
Solution:
As mentioned, the Milky Way has 200 billion stars.
In order to convert it into trillions we can directly use the billion to trillion conversion formula.
That is,
Billion to trillion = \(\frac{(given ~value ~in~billion)}{1000} \) trillion
= \(\frac{200}{1000} \) trillion
= 0.2 trillion
Therefore, the number of stars in the Milky Way is 0.2 trillion.
Example 3:
How many millions is 3 trillions?
Solution:
We already know that one trillion is equivalent to 1 million millions.
By using the formula,
Trillions to millions = (Given value in trillions \(\times\) 1000000) millions
= 3 \(\times\) 1000000 millions
= 3000000 millions
Thus, 3 trillions = 3, 000, 000 millions.
