Multiples of 16

The multiple of a number is obtained by multiplying the given number with natural numbers. For example, when we multiply 4 by  5 we get 20, so we can say that 20 is a multiple of 4 and 5. Here we will learn about the multiples of 16 and solve some examples for a better understanding of this concept....Read MoreRead Less

What are the Multiples of 16?

The multiples of 16 are obtained when we multiply 16 by any natural number. As we know that natural numbers are positive counting numbers and multiplying natural numbers with 16 will result in a positive product. The multiple of 16 can be expressed in the form of 16n where n is a natural number, that is, 1, 2, 3, and so on..

Let’s find a few  multiples of 16.

Put n = 1

16n = 16 \(\times\) 1 = 16

Put n = 5

16n = 16 \(\times\) 5 = 80

Put n = 2

16n = 16 \(\times\) 2 = 32

Put n = 1

16n = 16 \(\times\) 4 = 64

So, 16, 80, 32 and 64 are multiples of 16.

Multiples of 16 using Repeated Addition

Repeated addition follows the pattern of adding a number to itself, repeatedly. Repeated addition can be used to determine the multiples of any number.

Here the number is 16 so if we add 16 to 16 we will get a multiple of it, that is, 16 + 16 = 32, so 32 is a multiple of 16.

If we add 16 three times we will get another multiple of 16

16 + 16 + 16 = 48, so 48 is also a multiple of 16.

If we want to find the first ten multiples of 16, we can write it in the following way:

Solved Multiples of 16 Examples

Example 1: Write down three multiples of 16 which are greater than 50.

Solution:

As we know that the multiple of 16 is expressed in the form of 16n.

Put n = 3, 16n = 16 \(\times\) 3 = 48, since 48 is less than 50, so put n = 4

16n = 16 \(\times\) 4 = 64, which is greater than 50, so put more values of n

 To get a few more multiples.

Put n = 5, 16n = 16 \(\times\) 5 = 80

Put  n = 6, 16n = 16 \(\times\) 6 = 96

So, multiples of 16 greater than 50 are 64, 80 and 96.

Example 2: Write down the multiples of 16 between 30 to 100.

Solution:

As we know the first 10 multiples of 16 are 16, 32, 48, 64, 80, 96, 112, 128, 144, 160.

Hence, the multiples of 16 between 30 and 100 are 32, 48, 64, 80 and 96.

Example 3: What is the least common multiple of 16 and 8?

Solution:

Multiples of 16 are 16, 32, 48, 64, 80, 96, 112, 128…..

Multiples of 8 are 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 72, 80…..

Some common multiples are 16, 32 and 48 and the least of them is 16, so, the least common multiple of 16 and 8 is 16.

Example 4: The annual examination question paper contains 16 multiple choice questions.The time allotted for a student to answer each question is 5 minutes. What is the total time taken by a student to complete the examination?

Solution:

There are 16 questions and 5 minutes are allocated for each question. To find the total time for the examination we can multiply 16 by 5 to get the result.

16 \(\times\) 5 = 80

So, 80 minutes will be taken by a student to complete the examination.

Frequently Asked Questions on Multiples of 16

The smallest multiple of 16 is 16 itself, obtained when 16 is multiplied by 1.

As there are infinite natural numbers, multiplying each of these natural numbers with 16 this results in an infinite set of multiples of 16.

Yes, zero is an integer, when 16 is multiplied with zero gives us zero. Hence zero is a multiple of 16.

There is no natural number that gives 50 as a product of 16 and itself. So 50 is not a multiple of 16.

When two numbers are multiplied with each other to get 16 as the product, then these two numbers are called the factors of 16. However, when 16 is multiplied by a natural number, we obtain a multiple of 16.
