Number Names and Place Value

In order to write any number in words it is important to have a good understanding of place values.

Depending on the placement of digits in a number, their positional value can be expressed in words. For instance, depending on where the number 1 is positioned, the first two place values can be expressed as:

  • 1 – ones place
  • 10 – tens place

If we look at the chart, in the number 21 the tens place digit is 2 and the ones place digit is 1. So the number is written as ‘Twenty One’. Similarly ‘Thirty One’ for 31, ‘Forty Two’ for 42, and so on.

How can we Memorize Number Names?

We can use a few tricks to memorize the names of some numbers.

For instance, if we talk about numbers from 13 to 19, we can observe a pattern in their names, which is, number + teen. For example, Thir + teen for 13, Four + teen for 14 and so on.

Now for numbers from 21 to 29 the pattern is twenty + number. For example, Twenty + One for 21, Twenty + Two for 22 and so on. This same pattern exists for numbers 31 to 39 and 41 to 49.
