What is a Range in Math? How to Find Range for the data sets (Definition, Examples) - BYJUS

Range

Range, in statistical terms, can be defined as the difference between the highest and lowest values among a set of values. With the help of range, we can understand how much of a data set can be stretched as per the values....Read MoreRead Less

What do you mean by Range?

In statistics, the range for a given data set can be defined as the difference between the highest and the lowest values. The difference between the values is known as the range of observation.

What is the Formula for Range?

The formula for finding the range in statistics is:

Range = Highest Value – Lowest Value

We can also write this as,

Range = Highest observation – Lowest observation

How do you find Range in Statistics?

When we have to find the range in statistics, we will first arrange the data set in ascending order. We will then take down the observations from the lowest to the highest value. We will then find the range of observations.

Solved Range Examples

Example 1: Find the range of the given observations: 67, 72, 26, 45, 39, 50, 77 and 21.

Answer: We will first arrange the observations in ascending order.

Thus the data set will be: 21, 26, 39, 45, 50, 67, 72, 77.

Now, the lowest value = 21 and the highest value = 77

Hence, the range of the observations will be,

Range = highest value – lowest value

= 77 – 21

= 56

The range of the given values is 56.

Example 2: Alice scored the following marks in her 8 subjects: 78, 89, 93, 56, 50, 68, 81 and 95.

Find the range of her marks.

Answer: Let us first arrange the marks in ascending order.

50, 56, 68, 78, 81, 89, 93, 95

Lowest marks = 50 and the highest marks = 95

According to the formula for range,

Range = Highest value – Lowest value

= 95 – 50

= 45

Hence, 45 is the range of Alice’s marks across 8 subjects.

Example 3: Find out the range for the following data set:

9, 9, 9, 9, 2, 2, 5, 5, 5, 4, 8, 8, 8, 7 and 7.

Answer: In order to find the range, we have to arrange the above data set in ascending order.

Hence, the data set will be: 2, 2, 4, 5, 5, 5, 7, 7, 8, 8, 8, 9, 9, 9, 9

Here the highest value = 9 and the lowest value = 2

The range for this data set will be,

Range = highest value – lowest value

= 9 – 2

= 7

Hence, 7 is the required range for the given data set.

Frequently Asked Questions

The formula for calculating range for any particular data set is Range = Highest value – Lowest value

The mean in statistics is given by the average of any data set.

Median of any data set measures the middlemost value of the data set that has been arranged in an ascending order.

Mode of any data can be defined as the most common value in the data set of numbers or quantities.
