What is rounding the numbers?

Rounding is a means to simplify a number to a given place value position by using the nearest landmark number. It is done for whole numbers, and for decimals at various place values say hundreds, tens, tenths, and other. Rounding is done to preserve the significant figures or value. The number of significant figures in a result is simply the number of figures that are easy to grasp and handle with some degree of reliability.

Why do we round numbers?

Numbers are simplified and made easier to use by being rounded. Their values are still relatively near to what they were initially, yet simplified. Land mark numbers or the rounded numbers are easier to remember, process and use. Numerous scenarios, including many in the real world such as the population of a country, the amount we spent at the grocery store, and the amount used to calculate a budget may not require the exact figures but a close estimated figure is equally good.

Solved Examples

Example 1: Round 2468 to the nearest thousand using the place value method.

Solution:

While rounding numbers to the nearest thousand, we check the digit in the hundreds place. Here, it is 4, which is less than 5. Therefore, 4 and all the digits right to it will change to 0 and the digit in the thousands place will remain the same. So, 2468 is rounded to 2000.

Example 2: Round 415 to the nearest hundred using the number line method.

Solution:

415 lies between 400 and 500.

Represent 415, 400, and 500 on the number line.

From the number line, 415 is on the left side of the halfway number that is 450 and thus closer to 400 over 500.

Therefore, 415 is rounded to 400.

Example 3: Round 0.276 to the nearest hundredths using the place value method.

Solution:

While rounding numbers to the nearest hundredths, we check the digit in the thousandths place. Here, it is 6, which is greater than 5. Therefore, the hundredths value 7 will change to 8. So, 0.276 is rounded to 0.28

Example 4: Round 0.51 to the nearest tenths using the number line method.

Solution:

0.51 lies between 0.5 and 0.6

Represent 0.51, 0.5, and 0.6 on the number line.

new5

From the number line, 0.51 is on the left side of the halfway number i.e 0.55 and thus is closer to 0.5 over 0.6

Therefore, 0.51 is rounded to 5.

Frequently Asked Questions

When a number is rounded, it is reduced to a simpler value while retaining a significant portion of its original value. Calculations are made easier and figures are converted to an approximation that is simpler to recall when numbers are rounded.

While rounding the digit of a particular place is compared to 5. If the digit is equal to or less than 5, the left digit remains the same. And if the digit is greater than 5, the left digit is increased by 1.
