Sides and Vertices

Shapes are an important part of geometry. While learning about geometric shapes, it is essential to learn about their sides and vertices as well. In this article, you will learn about the sides and vertices of geometric shapes....Read MoreRead Less

What are the Sides of a Shape?

The sides of a two dimensional shape are straight lines forming the boundary of the shape. Sides of a 2D shape are also called its edges. Two sides join to form a vertex. For instance, a triangle has three sides or edges.

For three dimensional shapes, sides refers to the faces of the object. These sides or faces connect to form the edges of the shape. For example, a cube has 6 square shaped sides or faces.

What are Vertices of an object?

Vertices of an object are the points or corners where the edges connect. ‘Vertex’ is the singular form of vertices. For example, the following pentagon has five vertices.

Solved Examples

Example 1: In the following two shapes, which shape has more vertices?

                                           new3 new4

Answer: The shapes given are a hexagon and a triangle. As we have learned, vertices are the corners which connect the edges with each other.

                                     new3 new4

Hence, a hexagon has 6 vertices and a triangle has 3 vertices.

Thus, the hexagon has more vertices as compared to the triangle.

Example 2: Tanya created the following shapes with playdough.

new5

Answer: The playdough figures created by Tanya are:

A square, circles, a triangle, a diamond, a star and the shape of a heart.

The shapes with more than three sides are:

  • Diamond
  • Square
  • Star

Example 3: State the number of vertices for the following shapes:

new7

Answer: Here are the number of vertices for the given shapes:

  • Square has 4 vertices
  • Circle has no vertices
  • Triangle has 3 vertices
  • Rectangle has 4 vertices
  • Pentagon has 5 vertices
  • Hexagon has 6 vertices
  • Octagon has 8 vertices
  • Nonagon has 9 vertices
Frequently Asked Questions

Circles don’t have vertices as they are made of a single curved line.

Quadrilaterals are four sided two-dimensional shapes. These shapes are closed and have both sides and vertices. A rectangle is an example of a quadrilateral.

2D shapes are flat shapes that have only two dimensions which are length and width. These shapes do not have height, depth or thickness.

3D shapes are solid shapes that have three dimensions that are length, width and height.
