What Are Decimals?

Decimals are utilized to express a whole number and a fraction. Here, we use a “.”, known as a decimal point, to demarcate the whole number from the fraction. The whole number is represented to the left of the decimal point, while the fraction, as a decimal, is represented to the right of the decimal point.

The group of numbers between two integers on a number line are known as decimal numbers. They are mainly an alternative mathematical representation of fractions. Decimals allow us to express measurable quantities like length, weight, distance, money, etc. with greater accuracy.

Place Value Table:

A place value table ensures that the digits are at the appropriate place in a number, and this also helps in comparing numbers. Also, place value helps in the subtraction of numbers. The place value of each digit can be easily shown through a place value table. Do note that the value of a place is 10 times the value of the place to the right. Also, the value of each place is one-tenth \(\left( \frac{1}{10} \right)\) the value of the place to the left.

Solved Examples

Example 1: Find the difference when 4.852 is subtracted from 5.362.

Solution:

Place both the decimals in a place value table and find the difference,

fra2

So, 5.362 – 4.852 = 0.510.

Example 2: Subtract 75.0129 from 87.3692.

Solution:

Place both the decimals in a place value table and find the difference,

fra3

So, 87.3692 – 75.0129 = 12.3563.

Example 3: Find the difference of 0.98236 and 0.7589.

Solution:

Place the decimals in a place value table and find their difference,

fra4

So, 0.98236-0.7589 = 0.22346.

Example 4: Subtract the difference of 1.25 and 0.7894 from 3.1262.

Solution:

Step 1: Place 1.25 and 0.7894 in a place value table and find their difference,

fra5

Hence, the difference between 1.25 and 0.7894 is 0.4606.

Step 2: Place 3.1262 and 0.4606 in a place value table and find their difference,

fra6

So, the final answer is 2.6656

Example 5: Subtract 0.011256 from 0.20056.

Solution:

Place both the decimals in a place value table and find their difference,

fra7

So, 0.20056 – 0.011256 = 0.189304.

Frequently Asked Questions

A decimal number is the combination of a whole number and a decimal part (that represents a fraction). The decimal point is a point or dot that is used to separate the whole and the decimal part of a number.

While dealing with subjects like money, weight or length on a daily basis, we implement decimals in calculations. This is because greater accuracy is provided by decimals as compared to whole numbers. For instance, when we check our weight on the weighing machine, we don’t always find that the weight on the scale to be equivalent to a whole number. But an accurate measure of the weight is when decimals are used.

Decimals with the same number of decimal places are referred to as ‘like decimals’.

To convert any of the decimals into like decimals, we must add the necessary number of zeros to the right of the decimal. This method is followed in subtracting decimals as it helps in simplifying the operation.

Repeating decimals are ones in which one or more digits occur in a repetitive pattern. In contrast, non-repeating decimals are those in which the decimal digits do not follow a repetitive pattern. For example, 2/3 = 0.666666 is a repeating decimal. An example of a non-repeating decimal number is 1.02022022202222.
