The UPSC Civil Services Exam Pattern

The Civil Services Exam is conducted every year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and the exam is conducted in three stages and they are:

  1. Prelims
  2. Main
  3. Personality Test/Interview

Pattern of UPSC Exam Prelims


The UPSC Civil Services (IAS) prelims exam has two papers, General Studies Paper I and General Studies CSAT Paper II. Both GS Paper I and II are of objective type with multiple choice questions (MCQs).  General Studies Paper I has 100 MCQs each question has four choices of answer and candidates should choose an option among the four given choices of answer.

The CSAT GS Paper II is of qualifying in nature and has 80 questions. Candidates should score a minimum of 33% or 66 marks in paper II in order to qualify to the next stage of the civil services exam i.e. the Civil Services Main Exam.

NOTE
  • There is a ‘Negative Marking’ each incorrect answer in the IAS prelims exam for both the papers.
  • The negative marking for incorrect answers will be 1/3rd (0.66) of the allotted marks of that question.
  • The GS Paper II (CSAT) is of qualifying in nature and candidates should score a minimum of 33 percent or 66 marks in this paper to qualify to Civil Services Main exam.
  • Candidates should appear in both the papers of civil services prelims exam for the evaluation.
  • The marks scored in the preliminary examination are not counted for the final score.
