1. Garuda Shakti

Syllabus – GS3, Security; Various Security forces and agencies and their mandate. 

Prelims – Eighth edition of Garuda Shakti – A bilateral Military Exercise.

Context – Bilateral joint training exercise – Garuda Shakti.

Details –

  • Indian Army special forces commenced joint exercise Garuda Shakti with their Indonesian counterparts at Sangga Buana training area, Karawang, Indonesia.
  • Since 2012, India and Indonesia have been conducting bilateral military exercises. India’s military exercise with its distant neighbour lying in between the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean, Garuda Shakti, is a major military event.
  • The exercise aims at enhancing understanding, cooperation and interoperability between the Special Forces of both armies.
  • The joint exercise includes orientation to advance special forces skills, sharing of information on weapons, equipment, innovations, tactics, techniques & procedures and lessons learnt from various operations undertaken, Special Forces Operations in jungle terrain, strikes on terrorist camps and a validation exercise integrating basic and advance special forces skills apart from gaining an insight into the lifestyle and culture of both countries to foster military cooperation. 
  • The Garuda Shakti exercise is another significant step in ensuring cordial relations between the two countries and also towards ensuring regional security.

2. 9th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) Plus

Syllabus – GS2, Global and Regional groupings.

Prelims – 9th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus.

Context – 9th ADMM plus in Siem Reap, Cambodia.

Details

  • The ADMM Plus is an annual meeting of Defence Ministers of the ten ASEAN countries and its eight dialogue partner countries, viz., India, USA, Russia, China, Australia, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea. The year 2022 also marks the 30th Anniversary of India-ASEAN relations.
  • Since its inception, ADMM Plus has developed into the main multilateral defence cooperation mechanism to promote regional peace, stability and prosperity on the basis of ASEAN consensus, unity and centrality principle.
  • Shri Rajnath Singh, the Indian Defence Minister, called for urgent global efforts to counter transnational and cross-border terrorism which is the biggest threat to regional and global security.
  • The minister asserted India’s commitment to nurturing practical, forward-looking and result-oriented cooperation between India and ADMM Plus countries for enhancing the maritime security in the region and safety of the global commons.

3. Manjula (Yard 786)

Syllabus – GS3, Defence.

Prelims – Ferry Craft – Manjula (Yard 786)

Context – Launch of 7th 250 men ferry craft – Manjula (Yard 786).

Details

  • Ferry Craft Manjula was launched at M/s Shalimar Works Ltd, Kolkata, West Bengal.
  • Manjula 786 is a flag bearer of the “Make in India” initiative of the Ministry of Defence.
  • Six ferry crafts have earlier been delivered at Visakhapatnam, Mumbai and Port Blair.
  • These ferry crafts have a service life of 25 years.
  • It will give a boost to the operational and logistic sectors of the Indian Navy. 

4. Agni – 3

Syllabus – GS3, Indigenisation of technology and developing new technology.

Prelims – Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) – Agni 3.

Context – India successfully tests Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile, Agni 3.

Details

  • India successfully carried out the training launch of an Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile, Agni-3 from APJ Abdul Kalam Island, Odisha.
  • The launch was carried out for a predetermined range and validated all operational parameters of the system.
  • Agni-3 is the third entrant in the Agni missile series. The missile is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead (weighing as much as 1.5 tonnes) and hitting targets 3,500 kilometres away.
