History of NICL
National Insurance Company Limited was established in 1906, to fulfil the nationalist aspiration for Swaraj. NICL was nationalised in 1972 and became a subsidiary of the General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC). It was combined with 21 foreign and 11 Indian firms after the General Insurance Business Nationalization Act was passed in 1972 to become National Insurance Company Limited, which is wholly owned by the Indian government.
