There are 100 questions from subjects like History, Polity, Economy, Geography, Environment, Science and Current Affairs. It is a multiple-choice question (MCQ) paper. Each question carries 2 marks and attracts a negative marking of 0.66 for every wrong answer. Candidates who clear the UPSC Prelims Cut Off appear for the mains stage of the Civil Service Examination.

There are 80 questions in the UPSC CSAT from the broad categories of:
- Comprehension
- Interpersonal skills including communication skills
- Logical reasoning and analytical ability
- Decision-making and problem-solving
- General mental ability
- Basic numeracy
Each question carries 2.5 marks and there is a penalty of 1/3rd marks (-0.83 marks) for each wrong answer, filled on the OMR sheet.
