Admissions into various undergraduate courses offered at IIT Madras are given on the basis of ranks obtained in JEE exams, mainly JEE Advanced. For postgraduate courses like M.Tech, M.Sc, and MA, students have to first qualify in entrance exams like GATE, JAM and HSEE, respectively. For PhD and research, students have an option of anytime admission mode. Candidates who have completed their U.G/P.G degree can apply for it.

The institute has its own placement cell that carries out various activities that help students appear for group discussions and interviews. Workshops on Communication skills and personality development are conducted for the benefit of the students. The institute  also conducts mock tests and practice sessions on Aptitude, Quantitative Ability, Logical and Reasoning to make students better prepared for the placement season when a lot of top companies visit the campus 

The process of the Placement season in IIT Madras is as follows;

• Invitation– The training and placement cell invites companies and decides on the eligibility criteria for the students along with packages.
• Registration– Students have to register for these placements them and submit their necessary documents to the placement cell.
