UPSC Study Materials for Mains
One cannot prepare for Prelims and Mains separately. The candidates have to adopt a holistic way to prepare for both stages as it has overlapping syllabus topics. Also, the gap between prelims and mains exam is only 2-3 months and if the candidate didn’t cover the syllabus for mains beforehand, the time might not be sufficient. The Mains (Written) exam has nine papers in total, out of which 2 are qualifying in nature and the other 7 papers are counted for merit ranking.

Apart from the General Studies paper, the aspirants also have to choose one optional subject from the list of optional subjects in UPSC. The one optional subject has two papers. Since the scope of the syllabus of the optional subject is a level higher than the bachelors’ degree and lower than the masters’ degree, the candidates have to be careful in deciding the optional subject.
