What is the Tableau of Republic Day?

Tableau refers to a group of models or motionless figures representing a scene from a story or from history or depicting culture.

During Republic Day, states and different departments and ministries showcase their achievements or culture during the republic day parade through their respective tableaux in forms of instruments, costumes and cutting-edge technology. Every display brings out the diversity and rich heritage of India.

How is Republic Day Tableaux Selected?

The government has a well-established system to select which tableaux will be displayed during the Republic Day Parade.

    • Ministries and states send their applications to an expert committee that consists of experts from fields such as art, culture, painting, sculpture, music, architecture and choreography.
    • The Committee examines the proposals for their theme, concept, design and visual impact before making its recommendations.
    • Three winners are selected after the Republic Day Parade.

In 2021, Uttar Pradesh, Tripura and Uttrakhand were felicitated with 1st, 2nd and 3rd, best tableaux of Republic Day, respectively. Last year (2020), Assam, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh were declared the winners for their Republic Day tableaux.
