Clearing the first stage of the Civil Services Exam is the easiest part of the 3-stage exam process. However, many aspirants take it too lightly and they have to start from scratch the next year.

The first step is to check your eligibility for the IAS exam.

      1. Candidates who are in their last year of college are also eligible for UPSC Prelims but they will need to submit the proof of passing later.
      2. The minimum education qualification required for the CSE is a graduation degree from a recognised University.
      3. For general category aspirants, the age limit is between 21-32 years of age.
      4. For general category aspirants, the number of attempts for the UPSC exam is limited to 6 attempts.
      5. For both, the age limit and the number of attempts, there are provisions of relaxation of criteria. Check IAS Eligibility for UPSC 2019 in detail.
      6. Ex-servicemen (and women) are also eligible for relaxation in criteria in the Civil Services Exam. Check the eligibility criteria for ex-servicemen in the IAS exam.

The UPSC Prelims is highly competitive as the exam is the entry point for a career in the Indian bureaucracy.

Via the Civil Services Exam (Preliminary), the UPSC recruits for:

      • The three All-India Service (Indian Administrative Service, Indian Police Service, Indian Forest Service)
      • Central Services ( Indian Foreign Service, Indian Revenue Service, Indian Trade Service etc.)

In total, the UPSC Prelims is the first stage of the entry process for 24 Group A and Group B services. To read in detail about the same and more information on the Civil Services Exam, refer to the link.

The Indian Administrative Service (IAS), the Indian Police Service (IPS) and the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) are the most preferred choices among the aspirants.

Know the IAS salary and IPS salary in India after the 7th Pay Commission. Along with the salary and perks, comes a heavy load of responsibilities. Read about the life of IAS officer to get some context.

Usually, around 10 lakh aspirants fill the UPSC online form. The entire application process including the issuance of admit cards has been made online by UPSC.

The e-Admit Cards for UPSC Civil Services Exam are issued 2-3 weeks prior to the date of the exam. Know how to download the UPSC Admit Card and steps to take in case of any discrepancy.

The Prelims stage of the IAS exam is a screening test for the Mains. UPSC filters the majority of IAS aspirants at this stage itself.  Past trends show that the number of candidates allowed to take the UPSC Mains is about 10-12 times the total number of Civil Service vacancies in that year.

Number of total vacancies in UPSC 2019: 896

Refer to the IAS Exam trend analysis for the number of aspirants who apply for UPSC Prelims and the number of successful candidates in the past few years.

The pass percentage for the UPSC IAS exam is less than even 0.5%. However, these statistics shouldn’t deter you from pursuing a chance of a fulfilling life in the most coveted careers in India.
