Question

A heavy ball is suspended from the ceiling of a motor car through a light string. A transverse pulse travels at a speed of 60cms-1on the string when the car is at rest and 62cms-1 when the car accelerates on a horizontal road. Find the acceleration of the car. Take g=10ms-2.

Solution

Step 1: Given Data:

Speed at rest, v1=60cms-1

Speed when car is in motion, v2=62cms-1

Step 2: Formulas used:

When car is at rest,

Tension, T1=mg

Speed, v1=T1/ρ=(mg/ρ)……….….1

When car is in motion,

Tension, T2=m(a2+g2)

Speed, v2=T2/ρ=[(m(a2+g2))/ρ]……….….2

Step 3: Finding the acceleration of the car:

Now,

v2v1=ma2+g2ρmgρ

v2v14=a2+g2g262604=a2+g2g21.034=a2+g2g21.140xg2=a2+g2g21.140-1=a210x0.140=aa=3.7m/s

Hence, the acceleration of the car is 3.7m/s
