Question

A particular guitar wire is 30.0cm long and vibrates at a frequency of 196Hz when no finger is placed on it. The next higher notes on the scale are 220Hz,247Hz,262Hz&294Hz. How far from the end of the string must the finger be placed to play these notes?

Step1. Given Data:

l1=30cmorl1=0.3mf1=196Hzf2=220Hzf3=247Hzf4=262Hz

Step2. We know that:

f1lorf=vl (where, v= constant for a medium)

Step3. Now:

f1f2=l2l1l2=26.7cm

Again,

f3=247Hz

Step 4. Further:

f3f1=l1l3f3f1=0.3l3l3=0.224morl3=22.4cm

In the same way, we have

l4=20cm

Hence, the finger should be placed at 26.7cm,22.4cm & 20cm to play these notes respectively.
