Question

A wave traveling on a string at a speed of 10ms1 causes each particle of the string to oscillate with a time period of 20ms.

(a) What is the wavelength of the wave?

(b) If the displacement of a particle is 15mm at a certain instant, what will be the displacement of a particle 10cm away from it at the same instant?

Solution

Explanation for the correct answer is,

Step 1. Given Data:

v=10msT=20×103secλ=Wavelengthofwaveϕ=Phasedifference

Step 2. (a) Wavelength is obtained as:

v=λ/Tλ=vtλ=20cm

Step 3. (b) Phase shift difference:

ϕ=2πλxϕ=2π20x10ϕ=πrad

Step 4. Further:

y1=asin(ωtkx)1.5=asin(ωtkx)

The displacement of a particle atx=10cm

asin(ωtkx+π)=y2-asin(ωtkx)=-1.5mm

Hence, (a) λ=20cm & (b) y2=-1.5mm.
