Question

A wire, fixed at both ends is seen to vibrate at a resonant frequency of 240Hz and also at320Hz

(a)What could be the maximum value of the fundamental frequency?

(b) If transverse waves can travel on this string at a speed of 40ms-1, what is its length?

Solution

(a)Two frequencies are v1=240Hz and ν2=320Hz

So, Maximum fundamental frequency.

=ν2ν1=320240=80Hz

Where v2 is the second frequency

v1 is the first frequency

(b) Givenv=40m/s

=>Lx80=0.5x40=>L=0.25m

Where L is the length

Therefore, the maximum frequency is 80Hzand length is 0.25m.
