Question

An infinite number of point charges, each carrying 1μC charge, are placed along the y-axis at y=1m,2m,4m,8m........ The total force on a 1C point charge, placed at the origin, is X×103N. The value of X, to the nearest integer, is ……… [Take 14πε0=9×109Nm2C2]

Solution

Step 1: Given that.

Charge of 1μC are placed point on the y-axis at y=1m,2m,4m,8m........respectively from the total force on a 1C point charge, placed at X×103.As shown in the figure below.14πε0=k=9×109Nm2C2

Step 2: Formula used.

Coulomb's Law:

F=kq1q1r2

Where F is force, q1=q2is charge, and r is the distance between charge.

Now,

The net force on 1C due to all each point charges of 1μC.

Fnet=kq1q2r12+kq1q2r22+kq1q2r32+......

Fnet=kq1q21r12+1r22+1r32+......

Fnet=9×109×1×1×10-6×1+12+1222+......

Fnet=9×109×10-6×11-14

Fnet=12×103N

Hence, the value of integer X×103N is 12 as compared to Fnet.
