Question

Calculate the speed of sound in oxygen from the following data. The mass of 22.4litre of oxygen at STP (T=273K and P=1.0×105Nm-2 ) is 32g, the molar heat capacity of oxygen at constant volume is Cv=2.5R and that at constant pressure isCp=3.5R

Open in App
Solution

Step 1. Given data

Temperature, T=273K

Pressure, P=1.0×105Nm-2

Molecular weight, M=32gM=32×10-3kgmol-1

Heat capacity at constant pressure, Cp=3.5R

Heat capacity at constant volume, Cv=2.5R

Volume , V=22.4lV=22.4×10-3m3

Step 2. Finding the adiabatic constant, γ

By using the formula of the adiabatic constant,

γ=CpCvγ=3.5R2.5Rγ=1.4 [ Where, R=8.314 is gas constant]

Step 3. Finding the speed of the sound in oxygen, v

By using the formula of speed,

v=γRTMv=1.4×8.314×27332×10-3v=99300v=315.12ms-1

Therefore, the speed of the sound is 315.12ms-1
