Question

Do electrons have a fixed wavelength?

Open in App
Solution

Momentum and wavelength of the electron.

The electron's wavelength is determined by its momentum. The formula is used to calculate the electron's momentum is p=m×v

Where p is the momentum

m is the mass of the electron

v is the velocity of the electron

The wavelength of the electron is given by

λ=hp

Where λ is the wavelength of the electron

h is the Planck's constant h=6.6×10-34kgm2s

Explanation

The formula for wavelength is called the de Broglie relation and the λ is the de Broglie wavelength of the electron. We know that slow-moving electrons have a longer wavelength than faster-moving electrons because of the de Broglie relation. Hence, electrons will not have fixed wavelengths.
