Question

Does the Voltmeter measure EMF ?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Electromotive force [EMF] is the amount of energy provided by the battery to each coulomb of charge passing through.
  2. The voltmeter is used to measure the voltages of either the direct or alternating electric current.
  3. An ideal voltmeter cannot measure the electromotive force of the cell.
  4. Current flows from higher potential to lower potential in an electric circuit.
  5. When there is no current flowing in the cell it is not possible to measure the force that causes the flow of current.
  6. A voltmeter can not be used to measure the EMF of a cell because a Voltmeter draws some current from the cell.
  7. The potentiometer is used to measure the EMF.

Therefore, an ideal voltmeter can not measure the electromotive force.
