Solution

The correct option is A

a. Both assertion and reason are false.

Answer (1) Both assertion and reason is the correct explanation for assertion

Reason-The reactants are most strongly adsorbed on group 7-9 elements, as for hydrogenation reaction, the general trend of catalytic activity increase from 5 to group 11 metals with maximum activity shown by group 7-9 element.

For 5-11 group Catalytic activity also depends upon adsorption of reactants on the surface of catalyst.

For 7-9 group elements, catalytic activity becomes maximum, this is due to to the fact that catalytic activity depends on variable oxidation states as well as atomic size. It largely depends upon rate of adsorption, equilibrium adsorption and surface reaction rate coefficients.
