Question

How do bonds work?

Open in App
Solution

Chemical bond forms

  • In interaction for the association of atoms into molecules, ions, and other stable species to make a familiar substance, their nuclei and electrons interact and distribute themselves in space in a way that total energy is lower than it would be in an alternative arrangement.
  • If the total energy of atoms is lower than the sum of energies of the component atom, then they bond together thus resulting in a lowering in bonding energy.

Therefore, bonds result from the electrostatic force between oppositely charged ions.
