Question

How do you Convert Benzene to Bromobenzene

Open in App
Solution

  1. In the presence of Lewis acid catalysts, such as ferricbromide is prepared by the action of bromine on benzene . To add a phenyl group into other molecules is used. One procedure requires the conversion to phenyl magnesiumbromide, the Grignard reagent.
  2. Bromobenzene is not an alkyl halide since it is bound to the sp2 carbon of a benzene ring by a halogen atom (bromine). This means a secondary alkyl halide is the molecule. The carbon that the chlorine is bound to be bonded closely to three other carbons with CH3-CCl(CH3)-CH3 (2-chloro-2-methylpropane), rendering it a tertiary alkyl halide.
