To identify the type of bonding:

The metals and bounded with each other with chemical bonds, the bonding can ionic or covalent bonding. An ionic bonding is always found in metals and non-metals while covalent bonding is found in two non-metals.

  • Electronegativity- From the electronegativity difference, we can find the type of chemical bonding. If the difference is between0.0-0.3 is nonpolar covalent, between 0.4-1.7 the bond is polar covalent, difference is greater than 1.7then chemical bond is ionic. For example- The electronegativity ofNais0.9andClis3.0. The difference is (3.0-0.9=2.1).Thus the bonding is ionic bonding.
  • Lewis dot structure- According to LDS shapes of an molecule can be determined. The four dots on central atom with no lone pair the shape is tetrahedral. The three dots one central atom with one lone pair the shape is trigonal pyramidal. The two dots one central atom with one lone pair the shape is bent.

Thus, the chemical bonding can be estimated by electronegative difference and Lewis dot structure
