Question

Is circular motion simple harmonic motion?

Open in App
Solution

Explanation:

Simple Harmonic Motion:

  1. The motion of the particle moving in a straight line with an Acceleration whose Direction is always towards a fixed point on the line whose magnitude is proportional to the distance from the fixed point.

Circular Motion:

  1. When a particle moves in a plane in such a way that its distance from a fixed position remains constant during motion then the motion of such particle in a circular motion with respect to that fixed or moving point.

Hence, the simple harmonic motion does not include circular motion. When a particle in motion is constantly under the influence of a force that acts perpendicular to the direction of motion, circular motion results. When a force acting in opposition to a particle's motion is applied, SHM results.
