Question

Is FF Bond Strong?

Open in App
Solution

  • FF bond is not a strong bond.
  • The heavy repulsion between the lone electron pairs of two fluorine atoms makes the F–F bond weak.
  • Additionally, because fluorine has very low ionization energy, it can readily react with other elements and disrupt the F–F bond.
  • Compared to the other group 17 elements, the bond length between the two F atoms is longer.
  • The FF bond is consequently weak.

Hence, the FF bond is not strong.
