Question

Is flour and water a colloid?

Open in App
Solution

Wheat flour is a suspension, it does not completely dissolve in water.

Suspension: A homogeneous mixture of particles whose diameter is more significant than 1000 nm and which is visible to the unaided eye is called a suspension.

  1. In such a mixture all the components are well combined, and all the particles are visible under the microscope.
  2. A mixture that is heterogeneous is a suspension.
  3. A suspension consists of large-sized solute particles.
  4. Its diameter is more than 100 nm.
  5. The constituent particles of a suspension are easily visible.
  6. Filter paper does not allow suspended particles to flow through it.
  7. Therefore filtration can be used to separate the suspension, and suspension instability.
  8. After some time, the suspended particles settle down. Due to the huge particle size of the suspension, a beam of light traveling through it would be scattered.
  9. Example of suspension is flour in water, muddy water.

Hence, Flour and water a not colloid. It is suspension.
