Question

Is Vapour pressure a colligative property?

Open in App
Solution

Colligative property: A colligative property is the property which depends on the ratio between the total number of solute particles to the total number of solvent particles in the solution.Vapour pressure lowering, freezing point depression, boiling point elevation and osmotic pressure are the example of colligative property.

  1. The vapor pressure of a system is an indicator of how likely the molecules are to escape into the gas phase.
  2. Vapor pressure is a collinear characteristic, meaning that how much it changes depends on how much solution is in the system.
  3. Physical properties can be divided into two groups.
  4. Sample size affects a wide range of properties (such as mass and volume).
  5. Distinctive characteristics of a substance are intensive characteristics (such as density and concentration), which are independent of the size of the sample being examined.
  6. In the third category, which is a subset of the intensive properties of a system, this section is introduced.

Hence, Vapour pressure is a colligative property.
