Ninhydrin test is a type of chemical test which is used to determine the presence of amines or α-amino acids.
Ninhydrin is chemical compound with molecular formula $C_{9} H_{6} O_{4}$ and has an IUPAC name of 2,2-dihydroxyindane-1,3-dione.
It is reacted to an analyte, which produces a deep blue colour structure which is also called the Rehmann'a purple.
This colour indicates that there is presence of Ammonia $({NH}_{3})$ primary/secondary amines, or amino acids in the given analyte.
