Question

Number of hydroxyl group in compound ‘Y’ is:

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Formation of double bond

The catalyst used here is H2/Pd,BaSO4, which reduces the triple bond present in the middle of the compound into a double bond.

Thus the compound X formed is:

Step 2: Oxidation to form hydroxyl group

Now after the formation of the compound X, dil.KMnO4is used at a temperature of 273K.

The oxidising effect of the dil.KMnO4produces hydroxyl group(-OH) in all the carbons that have a double bond.

The resulting compound Y so formed is:

From the compound Y, we can see that there are a total of 6 hydroxyl groups(-OH) present.

Therefore, number of hydroxyl group(-OH) in compound ‘Y’ is 6.
