Solution

The correct option is B

Na2C2O4

The correct answer is option B.

Explanation of correct answer :-

  • The compound that produces effervescence on reaction with conc. Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) is Oxalic acid.
  • So, the sodium salt of Oxalic acid given is N2C2O4 i.e. Sodium Oxalate.

Step 1 :- Evolution of effervescence.

  • When Sodium oxalate reacts with conc. Sulphuric acid, it produces effervescence due to evolution of Carbon dioxide and Carbon monoxide gas from the solution.

Step 2 :- Formation of precipitate.

  • Sodium oxalate reacts with calcified aqueous CaCl2 solution, it gives Calcium oxalate precipitates which is white in colour.

Na2CO4Sodiumoxalate+CaCl2CalciumchlorideCaC2O4Calciumoxalate+2NaClSodiumchloride

Step 3 :- Decolorisation of solution in an acidic medium.

  • Again, when this calcium oxalate is made to react with an acidic solution of MnO4, it decolorizes the solution.

Explanation of incorrect answers:-

Option A :

  • Sodium acetate (CH3COONa) on reaction with conc. Sulphuric acid (H2SO4), forms Sodium bisulphate (NaHSO4) displacing Acetic acid (CH3COOH).

Option C :

  • Sodium benzoate (C6H5COONa) reacts with conc. Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) , gives Benzoic acid(C6H5COOH) displacing Sodium bisulphate (NaHSO4).

C6H5COONaSodiumbenzoate+H2SO4SulphuricacidC6H5COOHBenzoicacid+NaHSO4Sodiumbisulphate

Option D :-

  • When a conc. Sulphuric acid(H2SO4)is made to react with Sodium formate(HCOONa), it forms Formic acid (HCOOH) alongside with Sodium sulfate(Na2SO4).
