Question

The current (in A) flowing through 1 resistor in the following circuit is

  1. 0.40A

  2. 0.25A

  3. 0.20A

  4. 0.5A

Open in App
Solution

The correct option is C

0.20A

Step 1:Given data and figure

Resistors R=1ohm

Step 2: Use the formula

Now used the formula,

Itotal=VRtotal

Where V is the potential difference.

The potential difference in the top most branch is V=1V

R1andR2are one Ohm each.

Now calculate the total resistance of the branch.

Use the formula for the effective resistance in series.

Rtotal=Rp+2Ω.............(1)

By using the formula for resistance in parallel.

Rp=R1×R2R1+R2

Step 3: Solution

Now substituting the values of R1andR2

Rp=1×11+1Rp=0.5Ω

Substitute the value in equation (1)

Rtotal=0.5+2Rtotal=2.5Ω

According the Ohms law,

Itotal=VRtotalItotal=12.5Itotal=0.4A

Note that the potential differences in the two branches are the same and the current divides into I1andI2step

Step 3: Use the formula

V=I1R1=I2R2

The total current,

I=I1+I2I1R1=I2R2I1R1=I-I1R2

Step 3: Calculate I1

Therefore,

I1(R1+R2)=I2R2

Now,

I1=I2R2R1+R2I1=0.4×11+1I1=0.2A

Hence, the correct option is (C).
