Solution

Given:

The standard enthalpy of Al2O3: 1675kJmol-1

and The standard enthalpy of CaO: 635kJmol-1

Given reaction: 3CaO+2Al3Ca+Al2O3

The expression used for the calculation of the standard reaction enthalpy:

ΔrH0f=ΔrH0f(Products)ΔrH0f(Reactants)

Putting values in the above expression:

ΔrH0f=ΔrH0f(Products)ΔrH0f(Reactants)

ΔrH0f=ΔrH0f(Al2O3)3×ΔrH0f(CaO)=-1675-3×(-635)=-1635+1905=230kJ

Therefore, the standard enthalpies of formation of Al2O3 and CaO are 1675kJmol-1and635kJmol-1 respectively. For the reaction 3CaO+2Al3Ca+Al2O3 the standard reaction enthalpy ΔrH0=230kJ
