Two ideal Carnot engines operate in cascade (all heat given up by one engine is used by the other engine to produce work) between temperatures T1 and T2. The temperature of the hot reservoir of the first engine is T1 and the temperature of the cold reservoir of the second engine is T2. T is the temperature of the sink of first engine which is also the source for the second engine. How is T related to T1 and T2 if both the engines perform equal amount of work?

Step 1: Given data

Temperature of the hot reservoir of the first engine is T1

Temperature of the cold reservoir of the second engine is T2

Temperature of the sink of the first engine and the temperature of the source for the second engine are equal, i.e., T

Step 2: Formula used

To find the relation between T , T1 and T2, we will use our understanding of the Carnot cycle.

According to the question, the situation can be described as:

So, for the source: QHQL=T1T ………………(1)

and W=QH-QL ………………(2)
And for the sink: QLQL'=TT2 ………………(3)

and W=QL-QL' ………………(4)

Where, QH : Heat input to1st engine
QL : Heat rejected from 1st engine
QL' : Heat rejected from 2nd engine

Step 3: Find the relation between T , T1 and T2,

According to the question:

Work done by 1st engine is equal to work done by 2nd engine

Or, From (2) and (4): QH-QL=QL-QL'

2QL=QH+QL'
Now using the equation (1) and (3) in the above expression, we get:

2=T1T+T2T
T=T1+T2T

So, option (B) is correct.
