Band gap is the gap between the valence band and the conduction band and is denoted by .
If the band gap increases that means the gap between valence band and conduction band increases.
Therefore more energy will be required to move the electron from valence band to conduction band.
In large band gap, the light of higher frequency and lower wavelength is used because more energy is required.
The elements with large band gaps are attributed as insulators and because of large band gap they are unable to conduct heat and electricity and hence termed as insulators or poor conductors.
