Question

What happens if you put water in a dry cell battery?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Dry cell is a type of electrical battery that is used in homes and portable electronic devices.
  2. Battery is an electronic device consisting of cells and is used to convert chemical energy into electrical energy.
  3. Dry cell is an electrochemical cell consisting of low moisture fixed electrolytes in a paste form which prevents it from flowing and thus it is easily transportable.
  4. Dry cells can be classified into Primary dry cells and secondary dry cells.
  5. Primary dry cells are non-rechargeable and non-reusable. Once the Electrochemical cell consumed all the reagents then it will not be able to generate electricity whereas Secondary dry cells are rechargeable using batteries and generate electricity.
  6. When we charge a dry cell, the concentration of electrolytes solution is increased and if we add water before the charging then the level of electrolytes expands and due to which it starts overflowing and battery will be damaged.
